![]() Its firepower, ease of use, low production costs, and reliability were perfectly suited for the Soviet Army's new mobile warfare doctrines. The AK-47 was finalized, adopted and entered widespread service in the Soviet Army in the early 1950s. As a result, they have been the subject of countless comparisons and endless debate. They are used by military, police, security forces, revolutionaries, terrorists, criminals and civilians alike and will most likely continue to be used for decades to come. These Cold War-era rifles have been used in conflicts both large and small since the 1960s. The two most common assault rifles in the world are the Soviet AK-47 and the American M16. On an upcoming post I will outline how to achieve a similar look on a rifle instead of a pistol, but with a Noveske Flaming Pig style muzzle device.M16A2 (top) and AK-47 (bottom) assault rifles Once it was all said and done, the comp looks perfect, and the combination of jam nut and crush washer left the perfect gap between the rail and the back of the comp to allow for any potential flexing that might occur. Since the base of the comp was obscured by the rail, I used my armorers wrench to tighten it up. It lined up just off center which gave me enough to tighten it down and clock in at dead center. Then I reinstalled the rail and tested the comp for fit. So what I ended up doing was removing the rail, installing one crush washer and one jam nut tightened down snug. After consulting a few friends, they suggested experimenting with a combination of crush washers and what is called an indexing nut or jam nut, as shown below: This created and awkward situation where the comp was cockeyed and jammed tight against the rail, but there was still thread left on the barrel. The issue I ran into in this situation was that the comp ran out of room to tighten down on the barrel threads because it was making contact with the face of the rail. Thankfully the comp necks down a bit to meet the barrel threads. Even though the rail has an advertised length of 7″ it’s technically 7.54″ accounting for the barrel nut, so the rail extends past the barrel threads by just a bit. In this instance I’m using a 7.5″ barrel, a 7″ UTG Pro Super Slim Free Float rail, and the SI CCC. ![]() The purpose of this article throws another wrench into the equation, the Strike Industries Cookie Cutter Comp’s unique shape requires a bit of additional consideration in parts selection in order to achieve the sleek look that it was designed for. So here are some things to consider if you want that sleek, sexy, super-extendo rail look… So why the long winded history lesson? Because even though the aftermarket now caters to this particular aesthetic of building, it still requires a bit of ingenuity to get all of the necessary parts to flow together ![]() Similar to how auto makers reacted to the success of the early crossover-type SUVs, the firearms market has reacted equally to Warsport’s success. But what is available is more of what I would call “a variation on a theme,” so to speak. ![]() What is available now in the aftermarket is in no way an attempt to recreate the LVOA look, War Sport has a tight grip on that. And that’s fine by me because this practice has forced the market to cater to those that seek a similar look but refuse to drop $1100 on a complete upper that is nothing extraordinary outside of its visual appeal. Naturally, as any enterprising business would, War Sport limits the availability of their rail system to their rifles and completed uppers only. Specifically their proprietary extended length rail system that surrounds muzzle brake and creates a very unique and aesthetically pleasing rifle. When War Sport introduced their LVOA rifle platform, it changed things in a big way. However, some trends seem to take hold and endure the tides of the ADHD nature of the firearms aftermarket. Trends in the AR-15 world are typically short-lived and are often superseded by whatever one of the bold faced high profile companies unveils at SHOT Show regardless of form, function or practicality. ![]()
